M27, The Dumbbell Nebula: The Dumbbell Nebula, or Messier 27, is a rather bright and large planetary nebula. This Nebula was created when a large star shed its atmosphere of gases. This exposed the core of the star, which produces large amounts of radiation that energizes the gas particles and makes them glow, not unlike a fluorescent light tube. This nebula is 1,360 light years away and is continually expanding. One day the nebula will dissipate all together. To find the nebula, look to Vulpecula the fox in the summer triangle. M27 can be found between Sagitta and Vulpecula even though it is technically in Vulpecula. The Dumbbell nebula will look like an oblong smudge in binoculars and details will be visible in a small telescope.
