Opposition: Opposition is when Earth and another celestial objects are at their closest. This term is usually used with planets and makes them much more desirable objects for viewing. Opposition not only makes a planet brighter but also allows one to see more details with aided vision (telescope or binoculars.) I know this from experience. When trying to view Jupiter in late December I couldn’t make out any discernible features on it but when observing Jupiter from with the same telescope at opposition I could clearly make out the 2 primary cloud belts. This also goes for all of the other planets. When opposition happens it makes each planet that much better for viewing! Below are pictures of Mars at varying distances from Earth.
